Biografie
Im frühen 19. Jahrhundert waren Schauspielerinnen gesellschaftlich noch wenig geachtet: dass sich eine Frau überhaupt in die Öffentlichkeit wagte, galt als ungehörig. Durch ihre bis dann unerhörten Erfolge auf englischen und amerikanischen Bühnen sowie durch ihre lebhaften Reisetagebücher und anderen Schriften gelang es Frances »Fanny« Kemble jedoch, diesem Beruf ein besseres Renommée zu geben. Sie wurde auch eine freimütige Gegnerin des Sklavensystems, das sie im Süden Amerikas auf den Plantagen ihres Mannes erlebt hatte.
Nicht nur die Tante Sarah Siddons, die als größte Schauspielerin der Welt galt, sondern auch Fannys Onkel und beide Eltern waren bekannte Londoner SchauspielerInnen, der Vater noch dazu Leiter des Theaters Covent Garden. Es war auch eine gesellschaftlich anspruchsvolle Familie: Fanny wurde auf eine Schule für höhere Töchter nach Paris geschickt. Als 1829 dem Theater der Bankrott drohte, mobilisierte Charles Kemble seine ganze Familie in einer Aufführung von Romeo und Julia, in der Fanny als Julia ihren ersten Auftritt hatte und durch ihren überwältigenden Erfolg beim Publikum die Finanzen der Familie rettete.
1832 ging sie auf Tournee nach Amerika, wo sie als erste wirklich große Schauspielerin bald alle größeren Städte in Ekstase versetzte. Schon 1834 nahm Fanny den Heiratsantrag eines wohlhabenden Mannes aus Philadelphia an und verließ die Bühne. Aber die Ehe war nicht glücklich — ihr Mann kam mit ihrem eigenständigen Temperament und abolitionistischen Denken nicht klar — und wurde 1849 nach langer Trennung geschieden.
Nach England zurückgekehrt, nahm Kemble ihre Karriere wieder auf und hatte mit dem Vortrag dramatischer Texte noch einmal großen Erfolg. 1863 veröffentlichte sie ihr Tagebuch eines Aufenthalts auf einer Plantage in Georgia, das die Greuel des amerikanischen Sklavereisystems aus erster Hand darstellte und das viele Engländer von der Unterstützung der Sklavenbesitzern im amerikanischen Süden abbrachten. In späteren Jahren beschäftigte Kemble sich damit, ihre vielbändige Autobiographie zu verfassen.
