Radclyffe Hall veröffentlichte 1928 den Roman »The Well of Loneliness«, der die bereits bekannte und anerkannte 48jährige Autorin etlicher Gedichtbände und Romane sofort weithin berühmt und berüchtigt machte. Das Buch, heute eine Klassikerin der Lesbenliteratur, wurde nämlich wegen »Obszönität« beschlagnahmt. In dem darauffolgenden spektakulären Prozess erklärten sich Virginia Woolf und andere angesehene AutorInnen bereit, zugunsten des »verdienstvollen, langweiligen« Buchs (Woolf) auszusagen.  Der Prozess war übrigens eine unschätzbare Propaganda. Hall wurde dadurch noch wohlhabender – eine kleine Entschädigung für herablassende oder feige Reaktionen der literarischen Elite und den gemeinen Psychoterror, dem sie ausgesetzt war.

Wer war Radclyffe Hall? Eine reiche Erbin, aufgewachsen bei einer lieblosen Mutter, begabt, aber faul: Statt an sich oder an etwas zu arbeiten, gab sie sich lieber ihren Liebschaften und der Jagd hin – bis sie 1907 die fünfzigjährige Mabel Batten kennen- und liebenlernte, die sie in die Welt der schönen Künste einführte. Mit »Ladye« lebte sie bis zu deren Tod 1916 zusammen, hatte aber schon ab 1915 eine intensive Liaison mit ihrer zweiten Lebensgefährtin Una Troubridge.

Nach Ladyes Tod widmete sich Radclyffe Hall, von Schuldgefühlen gepeinigt, jahrelang der Erforschung des Jenseits, um mit Ladye Kontakt zu halten. Una mußte all das mitmachen, wie auch nach 18 Jahren »Ehe« die viele Jahre währende Leidenschaft »Johns« (so wurde Hall von ihren FreundInnen genannt) für eine russische Krankenschwester.

Troubridges Biograph Ormrod glaubt, Radclyffe Hall sei transsexuell gewesen, körperlich eine Frau, aber psychisch ein Mann. Ihre bzw. seine Tragik habe darin bestanden, dass es diese Differenzierung zu jener Zeit noch nicht gab, geschweige denn die Möglichkeit einer Geschlechtsumwandlung. Eine These, die mit erklären mag, warum Radclyffe Hall Frauenbeziehungen nach dem Modell der patriarchalen Ehe gestaltete (und auch lebte). Viele Lesben haben deshalb mit »The Well of Loneliness« und seiner Autorin, trotz großem Respekt für ihre historischen Verdienste, bis heute ihre liebe Mühe.
