Zora Neale Hurston war zwischen 1920 und 1950 die produktivste schwarze Schriftstellerin in den USA: In ihren Romanen, Erzählungen und Essays hat die Vormutter einer ganzen Generation von schwarzen Autorinnen die Atmosphäre und Kultur des ländlichen schwarzen Amerika festgehalten und gefeiert.

Hurston wurde in einer traditionsbewussten und -reichen, rein schwarzen Gemeinschaft geboren. Ihr Vater war Baptistenprediger und Bürgermeister der kleinen Stadt; ihre Mutter gebar acht Kinder und ermutigte ihre lebhafte und frühreife Tochter, »to jump at de sun«. Nach dem Tod der Mutter – Zora war neun – wusste Zora, dass ihre Kindheit vorüber war. Mit 14 verließ sie ihr Zuhause und begann ihr eigenes Leben, arbeitend, reisend, studierend und schreibend. 1925 kam Zora Neale Hurston nach New York, knüpfte Kontakte mit schwarzen Schriftstellern der Harlem Renaissance und veröffentlichte Essays und Kurzprosa. Sie bekam ein Stipendium, um bei Franz Boas am Barnard College Anthropologie zu studieren und widmete danach vier Jahre ihren ethnographischen Studien. Sie bereiste Florida, Alabama, Louisiana und die Bahamas und sammelte Geschichten, Lieder, Spiele, Gebete und Predigten, die sie in Mules and Men (1935) veröffentlichte. Später bekam sie Guggenheim-Stipendien für Feldstudien in der Karibik, die in Tell My Horse (1938) verarbeitet sind.

Sie wählte schließlich das Schreiben als Beruf anstelle der Forschung und wurde die vielleicht bedeutendste Gestalt der afroamerikanischen Literatur der dreißiger Jahre. Ihre besten Werke leben von ihren frühen Erfahrungen des ländlichen Lebens der Schwarzen, wie der Roman Their Eyes Were Watching God (1937), der eine Frau auf dem Wege zur Selbstverwirklichung beschreibt, ihre Autobiographie, Dust Tracks on a Road (1942) oder die Kurzgeschichte Sweat (1926). Zora Neale Hurston bestand darauf, die Schönheit und Vollkommenheit der afroamerikanischen Kultur zu feiern und lehnte es ab, sich als »tragically colored« zu sehen, was zu einem Konflikt mit (männlichen) schwarzen Schriftstellern führte, die mehr die Unterdrückung der Schwarzen betonten.

In den fünfziger Jahren war sie nicht mehr gefragt und verbrachte ihre letzten Lebensjahre in Krankheit und Armut. Nachdem sie im Fürsorgeheim an einem Herzleiden gestorben war, musste für ihr Begräbnis gesammelt werden. Sie wurde in einem anonymen Grab auf dem »Neger-Friedhof« von Ft. Pierce, Florida, beerdigt: »eine letzte Ruhestätte, die symbolisch ist für das Schicksal schwarzer Schriftstellerinnen in Amerika«.
